Wellness Retreat
A vacant, cold, unkempt corner of the Foothills Hospital has been transformed into a tranquil retreat for cancer patients, visitors and staff.
A vacant, cold, unkempt corner of the Foothills Hospital has been transformed into a tranquil retreat for cancer patients, visitors and staff. The muraled sitting area is adjacent to the long-stay cancer unit.
Art à la Carte contracted Calgary artist, Doug Driediger to create a scene that incorporated mountains, wildflowers, flowing water, a path and a life force. The large, seven-panel mural entitled "Bethesda" reflects the biblical tale of the pools of Bethesda, whereby an angel is said to have stirred the waters so that each successive visitor might be healed. The area has been decorated with hand-made willow furniture and artificial trees to create an ambiance of a mountain meadow. All who visit find the retreat a delightful escape from the rigors of their medical protocols.
