Brighter views for Day Medicine
New SkyCeiling™ installed at last...
Things are finally "looking up" for patients receiving chemotherapy at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. Following two long years of negotiating, a 2' x 6' SkyCeiling™ was installed Valentine's weekend thanks to an all-out effort from the Foothills Medical Centre Maintenance crew. Thank you Henry and Pietre!
Ceiling Detail
Strategically placed in a treatment bay that has no windows, the backlit mural creates an "illusion" of nature thereby enabling the patient to be calmed by its tranquil effects.
Mary Sees Hope for Spring
The ceiling is the second of two purchased from U.S. manufacturer, The Sky Factory. Funding for the project was provided through the extreme generosity of the RBC Foundation.
On a day when windchills fell to -30 Celsius, lovely Mary told us that looking up at the buds conveys hope for spring. "You'll tiptoe into the next season, regardless of your (medical) outcome," she quipped gaily noting that when her husband, Pierre, arrived with sandwiches earlier, "it was like having a picnic outdoors under the sky." Pierre was quick to add his share of fun, saying that while he was happy to "rake up the forest leaves" for now, next time he'd really love a golf course!
Stay tuned for the latest on our upcoming research project that will quantify the effects of SkyCeilings™ for patients receiving stem cell transplants.
